RECIPE OF THE WEEK:

This recipe for celery and cashew nut soup combines the subtle flavour of celery with the nuttiness of cashew.

1 medium sized onion, peeled and chopped

1 medium sized potato, peeled and chopped

1/2 head celery, wash, remove leaves and chop

2 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons broken cashew nuts

1 1/4 pints vegetable stock

3/4 pint milk

seasoning to taste

Melt the butter in a large saucepan.Saute the prepared vegetables gently until the onion is transparent. Add the cashews and continue cooking for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the stock, bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.Add the milk and allow to cool slightly.Blend in a blender.Reheat to serve and add seasoning to taste.

Yield: 4 portions

What's Fresh at Mt Pleasant Market-July 17th

The Produce:

New Vendors:

Welcome Honest Food Farm back to Mt Pleasant Market! All the way from the Similkameen Valley, The Zebroff  family grow a wide variety of organic produce, be sure to stop by for their delicious peaches.

Gillespie’s Fine Spirits is an artisan craft distillery in Squamish BC. They produce a number of craft spirits from BC grain and fruit as well as a line of Boozewitch shrubs, tonic syrup and raw apple cider vinegar.

Don’t Miss Berry Fest!

This week we’re berry excited to celebrate berries: Blackberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries…we love them all! Vendors are celebrating the sweetest season by featuring their berry-filled products:

Applebarn will be offering flats of gooseberries (last week for them) and currants for purchase.  5 lbs boxes for $25 and 10 lbs flats for $40.

Urban Digs has two sausages featuring berries for the Berry Fest this week: one bison and one duck.

Old Country Perogi has yummy blueberry-filled pierogis

Jordans Jam seasonal berry jams with berries from VFM vendors;Gooseberry Jam made with gooseberries from Applebarn, Blackberry Jam with blackberries from Paul’s Produce, Strawberry Jam with strawberries from Maan Farms

BC Berry Council will be on hand with lots of recipes,storage tips and and activities! Plus Mr Blueberry!

Our Famous Annual Pie Competition

Bring a fork…there’s PIE! 

Amateur and professional bakers from all neighborhoods were  invited to bake their favorite berry pie and enter it in our BC Berry Pie Bake Off.  All pies are made with BC grown berries and baked from scratch. Judging starts at noon, and shoppers can buy pie by the slice for a $2 donation thru out the afternoon. YUM!

Judging will take place between 12:00pm and 1:00pm at Mt Pleasant Farmers Market . Winners will be announced at 1:30pm.

This is the first week for Soban Organic Farm at Yarrow Ecovillage who bring delicious organic produce and usually have some beautiful hand-carved something to grace your table.
