Lucky Lion

IMG_1472In the tradition of Chinese New Year, the lion will make an appearance to dance and bestow good luck and fortune on local producers, in the hope that better weather will return for the 2016 planting season. The lion will forgo eating the usual imported lettuce during the ceremony this year in favour of seasonal greens that will be hung from stalls throughout the market.

Other New Year festivities at the market this Saturday include a red envelope give-away to shoppers, a visit from the Hua Foundation to promote their Seasonal Choi Guide, and local offerings like meat, fish, and vegetables to help shoppers prepare a healthy New Year’s feast for the family.

Water Bath Canning & Pressure Cooker Demos

Since we’re featuring jars this February, the experienced folks at Wells Can are onsite all month to help you make the most out of yours! This week they’ll have:

  • On-site Calibration & Repair: Pressure Canners & Can Sealers
  • Make your own Tin Can Coin Bank
  • Canning: Hot water bath and Pressure Canning w/ Jars & Tin Cans

It’s a packed Family Day Long Weekend and lots to do for everyone. (Did we mention it’s Member Appreciation Day?)

See you at the market!

Food Truck February

foodtruckfest_wfm2016This is one of the only places you can get access to over ten Food Trucks in one place without having to pay to get in and this year we’re going more green than ever. We’ve challenged our Food Trucks to create a meal that fits in a wide-mouth 16oz mason jar so we can reduce the food packaging generated onsite. Look for creative grilled cheese dippers, beautiful salads, hot apple desserts and more. Bring your friends so you can sample one of everything!  More details

Nat Bailey CSA Share Fair - Jan 16

CSA Share Fair

Interested in subscribing to a CSA but not sure what’s right for you? Come talk to the farmers and fishers who offer them this Saturday, January 16, 10-2 at the Nat Bailey Winter Market.

Meet these farmers:

  • Blue Comet Seafoods

  • Cropthorne Farm
  • Fresh Roots
  • Klippers Organic Acres
  • Rondriso Farms
  • Shalefield Organic Gardens
  • Skipper Otto’s CSF
  • Sole Food Street Farms
  • Urban Digs Farm

Don’t know what a CSA is? Community Supported Agriculture, often shortened to CSA, is a prepaid subscription to a farm’s produce for the season. Most CSAs give shareholders a weekly supply of veggies, herbs, fruits and sometimes even eggs and meat. You know it’s fresh and you get to meet the farm and people who grew your food! The prepaid CSA arrangements also makes it a source of financial security for the farmer. Some CSAs also incorporate farm workdays for shareholders. Pickup days vary by farm and some offer pickups at a VFM location.

CSAs have been very popular recently. Be sure to sign up early before subscriptions are filled! VFM vendors offer everything from pre-loaded ‘credit’ cards, beastie boxes, weekly fruits and veggies boxes and more. A subscription to a CSA makes a great gift too.

Check out our CSA Box Program page for farm and contact information.
