In Season Now: Red Currants

We’ve just heard through the VFM grapevine that The Applebarn will be bringing the first of this season’s red currants to the markets this weekend. But how, you may ask, do you eat them?

While very common in the UK and Europe, currants are largely unknown in North America and eclipsed by their popular berry cousins like raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries. The folks at BBC Good Food assure us that red currants can be eaten raw – as long as they are sprinkled with a bit of sugar – and are ideal for jams, jellies, and other types of preserves.

Red currants are also known for their sweet but tangy-tart flavour that lends itself well to cakes and muffins, and hold their shape in baking. Did we mention that they’re also high in vitamin C? Four times higher per gram than oranges, and so much more local. Get some in your shopping bag this weekend from The Applebarn at Trout Lake, Mount Pleasant, and Kitsilano markets.

Vendor Features – Green Coast Coffee, Ice Cap Organics

Green Coast Coffee, often located in the Kits Cafe section of the market and known for their cold brew coffee, has added iced tea to their menu! Pictured is a Cold Brewed Pink Grapefruit Iced Tea on Nitro. Also featured is the “Blue Roy” a caffeine-free blueberry rooibos iced tea that’s full of antioxidants, and the “Black Silk”, a Sri Lankan black tea with marshmallow root.

Ice Cap Organics is a young, small-scale farm in Pemberton, founded in 2008.  They are only a few markets into their season and will be here all summer! This week is their second week of swiss chard and green garlic, and the first week of carrots and zucchini!

The cold, damp spring has resulted in a slow start to the season for growers across the board; many are reporting they’re a month behind planting, crops are struggling in the wet soil, and the lack of sunshine has been slowing down production. Despite these challenges you’ll find an abundance of fresh produce and new vendors!

Vendor Feature – Shalefield and Warmerdam

Last summer, some market staff went on a farm tour to a few farms including Shalefield Organic Gardens and Warmerdam Flowers, both here this week at the market!

 

Shalefield is in the Columbia Valley, just past Cultus Lake and we were warmly welcomed by Brian with a farm tour, including aromatic greenhouses filled with tomatoes, raspberries and other goodies. This week Shalefield will be bringing strawberries and microbasil to the market for the first time this season.

 

 

Warmerdam Flowers mostly specialize in tulips, peonies, daffodils and gladiolas. We got to see their automated greenhouse system for growing tulips in the winter. Now that we are fully past winter, tulips are in full force and last week Caitlyn brought peonies for the first time this season and should have more this week as well.

Transplant Tips

With spring in full swing and some days even feeling downright summery, seeing all the starter plants at the market is tempting and a great way to get a head start on your own garden. Farmer Koo has tons of options.

Now that you’ve bought them, how to ensure they do well at home?

Follow these steps and all will work out!

  1. Prepare the Soil: loosen, fertilize or compost and weed the soil
  2. Getting Used to the Great Outdoors: hardening off is the process of getting seedlings used to being outside in the cold and wind.
  3. Transplant! Dig a hole for your seedling in well-watered soil and set seedling in the hole, fill with soil and press gently, water and you’re done!
