This week we’re celebrating our local food growers with Farmers Appreciation Week! Join us as we celebrate the importance local food and farmers make to our everyday lives. Take an extra moment to tell the farmers how much you appreciate what they do and how important farmers markets are to you!

Abbotsford-based Mandair Farms will be new to the West End line up this week. Their team is dedicated to bringing the community local produce and support healthy living. In addition to a stall full of produce, Mandair Farms will have tasty  hot samosas for sale this Saturday!

We have our annual West End Harvest Festival coming up on Saturday October 8th! The festival will include seasonal recipes, fun activities for kids and adults, information, cooking tips, apple tastings, squash variety displays, and a Pie Competition! The Canadian School of Natural Nutrition will be on site this Saturday. CSNN Vancouver offers a holistic approach to natural nutrition and an education geared towards achieving optimal health and a lasting and rewarding career. Make sure to visit their booth if you want further information on their programs!

The Salt Spring Coffee Edible Scavenger Hunt is happening now until October 9th! Pick up a card at the Market Information Booth or download online, then complete all five activities listed on the edible scavenger hunt card and submit it for your chance to win a number of great different prizes! The West End Food Festival is on now from September 15th to the 20th! This is an annual event, geographically focused on Vancouver’s West End Neighbourhood, which aims to: create opportunities to celebrate the diversity of food and cultures in the community, bring public attention to various issues and concerns in our food system, use food as a mechanism to foster social inclusion and community building, facilitate skill development in urban farming and food preparation, and highlight existing community food assets. RIPE features a knock-out roster of farm-to-table chefs paired with VFM producers to present 8 mount-watering small plate tasting stations, seasonal cocktails, and local craft beverage.   Found a new favourite recipe thanks to a suggestion from David at Coast Mushroom! Mixed bag of mushrooms+rice=delicious,brag worthy dinner.

Kinoko Gohan

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mixed mushrooms
  • 2 cups rice (180 ml per cup)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp soya sauce
  • 2 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • water
  • 2 green onions, chopped

Instructions:

  1. Separate mushrooms into pieces. Slice thinly.
  2. Wash rice and put in the rice cooker’s removable bowl. Add salt, soy sauce, rice vinegar and stir. Add enough water to reach the line for 2 cups of rice, and then add mushrooms. Cook like white rice (according to the rice cooker instructions).
  3. After the rice is done, mix in green onions.
  4. Enjoy! And don’t tell anyone how easy it was to make:)

Come by and check out Sweet Fig Farm Collective who will be new to the Kits Market this season. They’re an urban farm collective that uses natural growing methods in bringing fresh edible/medicinal herbs, vegetables, bedding plants, cut flowers, and soil amendments to its market customers from no more than 35 km away.

Stoney Paradise Farm is making their first appearance this season at the Kitsilano Farmers Market. Milan is bringing beautiful grapes and tomatoes from the Kelowna – try them and taste why they claim to “bring the joy back to food!”

The Salt Spring Coffee Edible Scavenger Hunt has kicked off, and runs until October 9. This is a super fun and easy way for shoppers to connect with farmers, food, and even market crew for a chance to win some sweet prizes.

Pick up a card at any Vancouver Farmers Market, all Salt Spring Coffee events or download online here.

How to Enter:
Complete all five activities listed on the edible scavenger hunt card between August 27 and October 9. Fill out your contact details on the completed card.

Hand in your completed card at a Salt Spring Coffee booth or any Vancouver Farmers Market Info stand—or add a stamp and pop it in the mail!

What's Fresh at Trout Lake - Sept 10th

The Produce

The Vendors

We’ve got a vendor we’re seeing for the first time this week: Poplar Grove Hazelnuts. Peter and Elizabeth Andres in Agassiz have been selling organic hazelnuts at the market since 1997. They are coming out of retirement after a battle with blight that decimated their hazelnut trees and others across the Lower Mainland in recent years. Welcome back!

This week is the last for Applebarn Pumpkin Farm. Love their produce? Find them at the Mount Pleasant and Downtown markets until October 2nd, when the Mount Pleasant Market turns into a fall wonderland complete with hay bales, or consider visiting their farm for u-pick apples, a corn maze, and lots of fun for the whole family.
