Waste-Free Market Update
Well, we're getting great feedback from shoppers and the use of reusable bags continues to go up each week - thanks to all of you for helping contribute to this change. We thought we'd share what our vendors are doing to help too:
Jobsthof Orchards, tree fruit - is using biodegradeable carry bags and biodegradeable cups for their grab & go cherries
Cathy Albrecht, wood accessories - uses reclaimed furniture and packaging to create beautiful, vintage inspired home accessories and cards.
Anabella Designs, jewellery- has switched to biodegradable bags for those who need them but many folks decide to wear their purchases right away which saves packaging too!
Varinicey Pakoras, food service - uses paper plates only - no plastic cutlery needed to snack on their tasty veggie pakoras
Richmond Specialty Mushroom Growers, organic mushrooms - uses reusable cardboard tubs for displaying mushrooms and small paper bags for carrying
Knead Some Dough, bread - recycles kitchen rinse water to water her garden, uses only paper bags as necessary
Jay Springs Lamb, lamb and beef - have maintained use of butcher paper wrapping instead of switching to styrofoam and plastic, reduced their plastic bag use by 50% even though volume has increased by 400%. They are currently looking for a plastic-free way of packaging their wool bedding - any suggestions? Email them.
Organic Farm Connection, organic produce - has stopped offering plastic carry bags.
More updates next month!

Farm Folk City Folk Incredible Edible Tours
A day with Tallulah Winkelman, FarmFolk's Farm Tour Coordinator, starts in the morning in front of Capers on 4th Avenue where guests are welcomed onto their chartered bus. Included in the ticket price of $80 is a delicious lunch made with fresh, regional ingredients, transportation, the tours, and opportunities to purchase farm fresh food direct from the farm gate.

This years' tours are set for July 20th, "Today's Farmers: from an Urban Rooftop to a Rural Island" and August 23rd, "Farming in the Fraser Valley; Diversity At Its Finest."

"Some of this year's tours include a tour of City Farm Boy's rooftop garden, meeting a Westham Island farmer that grows potatoes for Hardbite Chips, and a dairy farm that is transitioning to organic certification. They are all unique and interesting farming operations," Winkelman says with anticipation, "I can't wait to learn more about them all and what they produce."

Because we only take 20 people on each tour, tickets sell out quickly. The Incredible Edible Tours are an excellent venue for folks to get out into the country air, meet the folks that put food on their table, learn how the food was grown, and when they're back at home and someone asks, "What are you eating?" they're able to answer with confidence and knowledge.

Slow Food Vancouver presents the 2nd Annual SLOW FOOD Cycle Tour Agassiz
Saturday, August 9th, 2008
Abandon your fast life for one day of S L O W and join SLOW FOOD CYCLE TOURS. Come to Agassiz on Saturday, August 9th, 2008 to participate in a self-guided bicycle ride following the popular 30km Circle Farm Tour. Embark on a leisurely cycle and learn more about local food production. Riding your bicycle, you will get to experience and taste local food products produced close to home, while getting to know and supporting your local farmers.

Inspired by the success of Slow Food Cycle Sunday Pemberton and the popular Circle Farm Tour, Slow Food Vancouver and the farmers of Agassiz are hosting this culinary adventure that will explore several farms. Some farms will be open to the public for this day only. For example, you will have a rare glimpse of a large commercial dairy farm, tour a land-based salmon farm, see how farming was done in the 1920s, see both heritage and rare breeds of cows and other animals, visit a farm that grows 25 different varieties of garlic and another that makes unique artisan cheeses.

The cycle tour runs from 9am – 4pm. The self-guided tour begins at the Fall Fair Grounds in Agassiz where participants receive a map they can follow to the various farm locations. There are ten stops on the route through the tranquil rural area of Agassiz-Harrison Mills and participants can take the tour as fast or as slow as they would like.

Slow Food Cycle Tours encourage us to go "green and clean" by promoting the use of bicycles and encourages conviviality through the connection of People, Food and Slow.

Opportunities

Vote for UBC Farm!
The Tyee (along with the David Suzuki Foundation, Pembina Institute, Western Canada Wilderness Committee and others) are encouraging people to pool their "Campbell Cash" and donate it to projects working to mitigate climate change in order to make more effective use of this money. ("Campbell Cash" is the name for the100$ climate action dividend sent in the mail to each B.C. resident this past month to spend on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.)

They're encouraging people to vote for their favourite projects online by July 25th. The top five projects will get funding ($500) and some valuable profile raising.

It is important at this critical time for the future of the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems/ UBC Farm to get the word out as much as possible about the value that Vancouver's last working farm has for UBC, Vancouver, the region, and the province in terms of providing accessible, hands-on opportunities for innovative research, teaching and community programming aimed at reducing global climate change through sustainable food production techniques.

So please take a second to vote for the farm. Just go to the link below to read about the details of the farm's "Changing the Food System to Change the Climate" project and vote away.

http://contest.thetyee.ca/greenyourcampbellcash/node/299

Again, voting closes July 25th - so don't delay!

And if you do want to donate your Campbell Cash to the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems/ UBC Farm, you can send your donation to the farm directly at the following address: UBC Farm, 2357 Main Mall, UBC, Vancouver, B.C., V6T 1Z4

Volunteering at Feast of Fields

The 14th Annual Feast of Fields will be held on Sunday, September 7th, 2008 and plans are in the works as we speak. Last year we were fortunate to have the best Feast Volunteer Team ever and we’re determined to do it again! We’re very excited to be holding it at UBC Farm for the second year in a row – as the only working farmland within the city of Vancouver, the UBC Farm is an urban agrarian gem, featuring a landscape of unique beauty www.landfood.ubc.ca/ubcfarm

This year, Feast of Fields will showcase BC's agricultural products by magically transforming UBC Farm into acres of gourmet buffet. Here, 1000 foodies (approx. 750 guests, 50 volunteers & 200 participants) will stroll in the countryside, wineglass and napkin in hand, savouring and celebrating the depth and wealth of the Lower Mainland’s culinary scene.

Why volunteer?
Because, you’ll receive:
• a fabulous feast featuring BC’s vintners, brewers, and chefs
• the opportunity to be a valued FarmFolk/CityFolk team member
• the opportunity to give to your community
• the chance to gain new skills while having fun
• gratitude from FarmFolk/CityFolk as we rely on your support of this primary fundraising event in order to continue our good work

If you're interested or want more information, please email me at krideout@interchange.ubc.ca and I will send you a volunteer application form.
