Winter Farmers Market Opens November 7!

welovewinterIt's getting to be that time of year again - time to go inside and start a new season of the Winter Farmers Market! This year's market will again take place at the WISE Hall - 1882 Adanac Street at Victoria Drive with nearly 50 vendors each day (inside and outside).

The market opens November 7 and runs 10am - 2pm every other Saturday (except Jan 2) until April 24.
For a complete list of dates, check out our website at www.eatlocal.org/markets.html We'll also soon have interactive maps of our market so you can see who'll be at the market, what they'll be selling and where you can find them inside or outside the hall. Those maps should be up shortly and a link will be included on the front page of our site.

If you've not already signed up for your My Markets News email bulletin to receive a list of the vendors emailed to you two days before the market. MyMarketsNews.com

Last Call For Lost and Found
Have you left something behind at the market that you thought you might never find again? We may have it stored in our market office waiting for you to retrieve it. We have a whole lot of lost items waiting in our lost and found bin and this is the last call to claim it before we donate it to a worthy charity. There is everything from bike helmets to baby clothes, wallets, keys and glasses, scarves, mittens, hats and jewellery. Give us a call and describe what you've lost and maybe we can reunite it with its rightful owner. Call 604-879-FARM.

BC Association of Farmers' Markets - Winner Advancing Marketplace Trust Award
Better Business Bureau Award Announcement

This year Better Business Bureau recognizes an organization that promotes local BC farmers at its annual Torch Awards luncheon.

The Torch Award is a symbol of a company's commitment to honesty and integrity toward customers, employees, shareholders and their community, and is the highest achievement the BBB awards to the business community.

The Torch Awards includes the Advancing Marketplace Trust Award, which looks at positive contributions to social impacts and helped to offer choices for consumers. This year a selection panel awarded it to the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets.

“The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets encourages consumers to buy locally which benefits local entrepreneurs and also has a positive impact on reducing our carbon footprint,” said Lynda Pasacreta, BBB President and CEO. “Farmers’ markets also give consumers more options like organic food. It is great to have healthy products coming from local suppliers.”

We are very proud to be a member of the BC Association of Farmers Markets and congratulate them on their recent recognition by the Better Business Bureau.

klippersKlippers Organic Acres Winter CSA
Klippers Organic Acres is now taking members for their winter CSA. It runs from November to April and will have pick ups twice a month for a total of 12 pickups at the Winter Farmers Market held at the WISE Hall.

As you may know, Annamarie and Kevin Klippenstein grow a wide diversity of fruits, vegetables, and herbs on their properties in Cawston. For each pickup they try to balance the need for basics like squash, onions, apples, walnuts and frozen tomatoes. During weeks where there is not much fresh produce you may be surprised with some apple juice, no sugar jam, or our tantalizing dried fruit. The winter share runs for 12 weeks from November thru April and every second week (except for January 2) recipients get a box of goodies valued at least $40.

To sign up just go to our website: www.klippersorganics.com and go to Join the Farm- from there just follow the links.

More Community Garden Opportunities
2010 Garden Plots by 2010 is a challenge to encourage the creation of 2,010 new garden plots in Vancouver by January 1, 2010, as an Olympic legacy. The challenge was issued to individuals, families, community groups and neighbourhood organizations in 2006 to help establish more food-producing gardens in the city.

Several potential sites for new food producing community gardens have been identified and the City of Vancouver is currently seeking applications from community groups to manage them. If you or your organization is interested in being part of the 2010 challenge by helping to create a new community garden in Vancouver, submit an application to communitygardens@vancouver.ca by October 31, 2009.

Applications can be submitted for one or more of these potential garden sites. Please note that successful applicants must be one of the following:

A registered non-profit organization, co-operative, or strata council; or,
Sponsored by an existing registered non-profit organization, co-operative, or strata council

Questions about the RFP can be directed to Erin MacDonald at the aforementioned email address.
