East Van Location Update
We are happy to provide an update in regards to the location of the East Vancouver Market in 2010. We have received conditional approval to move the market to the North Parking Lot of Trout Lake Park (aka. John Hendry Park). Some of you may know this parking lot as the lot we direct shoppers to park in during the market. The space is flat, open and large enough to accommodate the same number of vendors as last year. We hope to work closely with the city to find alternate parking for vendors & are planning on additional programs to encourage shoppers to ride or walk to the market to keep congestion down.

During the next 2 months we will be conducting a community consultation and finding solutions to concerns that may be raised about this temporary location. Once the community centre construction is complete, we intend to move back closer to our old location.

The Park Board will need to approve this move in April.

If you would like to comment on this plan, please contact Park Board Events at parkevents@vancouver.ca

Business as Usual During Olympics
The Winter Farmers Markets will be continuing through February & the Winter Olympics so don't get so caught up in the festivities that you forget to eat local! In fact, the Winter Markets have been offering a display of the best of BC for years so we'll take credit for a great amount of the local pride going around. Markets are planned for February 13 & 27, 10am - 2pm

The local food scene is of great interest to visiting media so don't be surprised if you see camera crews and reporters scoping out the markets over the next month. The market is also a great place to bring visiting guests.

One more thing... we would like to remind everyone that walking, biking or taking transit to the market is always the best idea. See you there & Go Canada!

Market Vendors Not Returning in the Summer of 2010

Two fan-favourite vendors will not be returning the markets this summer because of exciting happenings in their life. Thomasina & Jerome of Knead Some Dough have moved to Princeton and will be opening a tea shop/cafe coming up soon. They will not be attending any more Winter Market dates this season as well. We'll send more details about their plans as we learn them but in the meantime if you'd like to contact them, they can be reached at thecommongood@gmail.com

Kelly Boyd of Bad Girl Chocolates will be taking the summer off this season because she and her husband are expecting their first child in June. No word yet if the new little sweetie is a little boy or a little "bad girl". Stay tuned for an announcement here in Market Share this summer.

February 17 – What Happens When the Honeybees Disappear?– 10:00 am (PST) – with Ted Leischner
Colony collapse disorder of bees is a serious and alarming trend that is threatening the livelihood of farmers worldwide. To put the situation into context, Ted Leischner, corresponding CANPOLIN member and conservation volunteer, will discuss what is killing our bees as well as the immediate grassroots actions that farmers can take to assure pollination services, food security and ecological health. There is much that can be done that is quick, convenient and economically feasible but, it will require a shift in perspective. Ted will share his insights on how we can employ the 400 species of native bees that are exquisitely adapted to living here and operate as a complete pollination guild for our ecosystem.

For further information and registration information see http://www.certifiedorganic.bc.ca/infonews/events.php
The fee for each seminar is $20.00 (incl. GST), student/apprentice rate $10.50 (incl. GST). The deadline for registration is midnight, of the Monday before each seminar.

slowfood Red Fife Wheat by donation

Available in 2.5kg packages and 20kg sacks. Flour and berries by donation to support local farmers attending Terra Madre 2010. Email Joanne (infosfv@slowfoodvancouver.com) to arrange pick up dates.

The wheat was grown by Holly Peterson in Saskatchewan and milled by John at Anita’s Organic Flour Mill in Chilliwack. The flour and milling were donated to Slow Food for this project.
Let us know of your experience baking with the flour and share your recipes with us. We will post them on our site. All proceeds to be used to send a representative to Terra Madre in Italy in October. For further information visit: http://www.slowfoodvancouver.com/index.php/adopt-a-farmer/

Red Fife wheat is Canada's first Presidium because of its historic significance in the development of Canada's wheat sector and because of its exceptional flavour and near extinction status. It is also in The Ark of Taste which aims to rediscover, catalog, describe and publicize forgotten flavors. It is a metaphorical recipient of excellent gastronomic products that are threatened by industrial standardization, hygiene laws, the regulations of large-scale distribution and environmental damage. visit http://www.slowfoodfoundation.org/eng/arca/lista.lasso for further information.
