Salmon Celebration
Celebrate the return of salmon at Trout Lake!
We’re celebrating the return of salmon season and the fact that we can now enjoy fresh salmon direct from fishers at farmers markets! Enjoy salmon-themed food truck creations, pick up a fresh, whole salmon caught in Barkley Sound, learn how to can, smoke and fillet salmon at home and more!
Ocean Wise and Salmon-Safe BC will be onsite to talk about their programs and how YOU can support salmon in BC by making salmon-friendly choices at the farmers market
- Where: Trout Lake Farmers Market
- When: Saturday, June 20, 9am-2pm
Live Demonstrations
Don’t miss live salmon fillet demonstrations from the knowledgeable folks at Skipper Otto’s Community Supported Fishery. They’ve been teaching beginners how to get the most out of a whole fish for years and know all the tips and tricks. Their education team is bringing smoking and canning equipment for show and tell too – and if you join their CSF, you can get a chance to use them!

Our farmers are Salmon-Safe!
Salmon-Safe BC is an independent third-party certification program that recognizes farmers who adopt progressive, environmentally friendly management practices on agricultural lands to help protect Pacific salmon habitat and enhance water quality. Salmon-Safe helps educate and support land users, retailers and consumers about the importance of protecting healthy and functioning ecosystems and watersheds that are essential to salmon
Buy produce from these salmon-safe farmers:
- Morningstar Farm, Parksville (Little Qualicum Cheese and MooBerry Winery at the market)
- Albert’s Herbs & Nursery, Burnaby

- Shalefield Organic Gardens, Lindell Beach

Our fishers are Oceanwise!
Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. They’ve got great recommendations for which fish are the most sustainable to consume and which fishers, restaurants and producers are following responsible practices.
Buy seafood from these Ocean Wise vendors:
- Blue Comet Seafoods, Vancouver
- Estevan Tuna, Courtney
- Skipper Otto’s Community Supported Fishery, Vancouver
- Fresh Off the Boat Ocean Foods, Surrey
Pick up salmon for dinner!
**Blue Comet Seafoods is a family-owned business. The salmon is gill net caught, carefully dressed and frozen at sea. All our product is pinboned, vacuum sealed and kept frozen to maintain the excellent quality of our salmon.
**Skipper Otto’s Community Supported Fishery is inspired by the very successful model of “Community Supported Agriculture” (CSA) which seeks to link consumers to family businesses that produce local, organic, sustainable, fairly traded food. By investing a sum at the start of the season, customers guarantee that we have enough money to operate our fishing business for the season. In exchange, customers will receive a bounty of wild, fresh, northern salmon. They sell to anyone at farmers markets too!
Fresh Off the Boat Ocean Foods is a fisherman direct family business and is proud to be a member of The Vancouver Aquariums Ocean Wise program for Sustainable Seafood and carries halibut fillets, cheeks, sockeye salmon fillets, smoked salmon, side-stripe shrimp, ling-cod, snapper, and sablefish.
**Will have fresh salmon (whole and filleted) for this event and while salmon is in season
