A Sweet Boost for Food Security: Thank You to the Hot Chocolate Festival
Every winter, when Vancouver’s rainy season is at its gloomiest, something wonderful happens across the city: cafés, bakeries, chocolatiers, and dessert makers come together to celebrate creativity, community, and a cup of comforting hot chocolate.
This year, the 16th edition of the Hot Chocolate Festival once again brought warmth to the season — and meaningful support to families in our community.
Thanks to the generosity of participating festival vendors, $19,042 was raised in 2026 for Vancouver Farmers Markets’ Fresh to Families Program. Every dollar of this contribution will help ensure that families facing food insecurity can access fresh, local, nourishing food at our farmers markets.
A festival with Heart
Since its launch in 2010, the Hot Chocolate Festival has been bringing together cafés, chocolatiers, bakeries, and pastry shops from across British Columbia to create imaginative, festival-exclusive hot chocolate experiences. What began as the world’s first city-wide festival dedicated to hot chocolate has grown into a beloved winter tradition that celebrates local food businesses while supporting community initiatives.
One of the festival’s core goals is giving back. Participating vendors donate a portion of proceeds to local charities chosen as festival partners — making every cup of hot chocolate part of a larger story of community care.
We are incredibly grateful that Fresh to Families continues to be one of those beneficiaries.
Why Fresh to Families matters
Fresh to Families is a Vancouver Farmers Markets program that helps families experiencing food insecurity access fresh, local, and culturally appropriate food at farmers markets.
Through the program, families receive coupons that can be redeemed directly with farmers and food producers at our markets. This model does something powerful:
- Families get nutritious food with dignity and choice.
- Farmers receive reliable income for the food they grow.
- Every dollar stays within the local food economy.
Programs like Fresh to Families are more important than ever. As the cost of living continues to rise, many households face difficult decisions about food. Support from community initiatives like the Hot Chocolate Festival helps ensure that local families can still put nourishing food on the table while supporting the farmers who grow it.
This Partnership Warms the Community
Year after year, the Hot Chocolate Festival demonstrates what community-powered generosity looks like.
From creative chocolate concoctions served in cozy neighbourhood cafés to the collective effort of dozens of independent food businesses, this festival shows how small moments of joy — like sipping a warm drink on a rainy day — can have a meaningful impact.
To the incredible vendors who donated a portion of their proceeds this year: Thank You! Your generosity helps bring fresh food, dignity, and connection to families across our community.
And to everyone who explored the festival, tried a new flavour, or shared a cup of hot chocolate with friends — you helped make this impact possible.
