Market News

This is it folks, it’s the last week of the Nat Bailey Winter Farmers Market before we kick off the summer season! We’ve got you covered next week though, because Hastings Park runs until April 29th. VFM would like to thank all the shopper, vendors and community partners for making this a wonderful Winter Market Season!

Like Shopping at Nat Bailey Winter Market? VFM is excited to announce the opening of our brand new summer market in the newly renovated Riley Park across the street! Opening June 24th, Riley Park Farmers Market will kick off it’s Grand Opening. We at VFM feel its going to be a lovely addition to Saturday’s in Vancouver.

Its Earth Day Saturday April 22. Let’s all try to do our part in the fight for a clean environment. Did you know, Earth Day has reached into its current status as the largest secular observance in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year, and a day of action that changes human behavior and provokes policy changes. VFM invites you to be a part of Earth Day and help write many more chapters.

ElectroRecycle will be onsite this weekend, they will be ready to accept over 300 small appliances while you shop the best in local flavours at Nat Bailey Winter Farmers Market. ChopSwap is a community campaign that helps turn local restaurants and their customers into zero-waste heroes, and they will have a station at the market this Saturday! Pay them a visit to swap your disposable chopsticks for a pair of reusable ones! All swapped + reclaimed chopsticks will be donated to local school arts programs, crafters and other creative initiatives (or sent to compost).

The David Suzuki Foundation and Eco justice are partners in the Blue Dot movement. They will be onsite this weekend at Nat Bailey. They are a national grassroots campaign to advance the legal protection of all Canadians’ right to live in a healthy environment. The Blue Dot movement is based on the simple but powerful idea that all Canadians have the right to clean air and water, safe food, a healthy climate, vibrant ecosystems and a say in decisions that affect their health and well-being. Check them out and show them some love!

This is our last market day for the Nat Bailey market season! We’re ramping up for the summer market season and look forward to continue on developing a sustainable food system in Vancouver that helps feed people in our region, supports the local economy and protects our local environment and farms for decades to come!

Featured Vendor: Rising Knead Bakery

A small artisan bakery specializing in traditional naturally fermented sourdough breads and pastries. Rising Knead uses fresh ingredients that are locally-sourced and organic where possible. Everything is handcrafted in small batches using organic Canadian-grown grains with a percentage now being freshly milled.

Catch Rising Knead for their first VFM market this Sunday at Hastings Park! 

Veggie of the Week: Rhubarb

Rhubarb! A sign that spring is actually here (don’t let this gloomy weather fool you). Pickup some frozen berries from Paul’s Produce and whip up a berry rhubarb pie this Sunday.

Vendors

Farmer Koo will be at Nat Bailey Market this weekend for the first time this season. With his arrival he brings a splash of spring! Stop by and pick up some of his cool weather starts that include broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, snow peassnap peas and sugar peas . Also make your day brighter or a special someone’s with his beautiful Tulips and Daffodils.

Hannah Brook Farm is making their first appearance of the season at the Market this weekend. They will have a variety of Salad mix and greens, go check them out!

Twin Oaks Farm will be bringing their awesome Carnivorous Plants to Nat Bailey this Saturday. They carry 6 different varieties including – Venus fly traps, Sundews, Butterworsts and Pitcher Plants.

There are only 2 weeks left in the Nat Bailey market season! Our last day onsite is April 22nd. Naturally Died Easter Eggs

Skip the egg dying kit and use your veggie scraps to dye eggs this Easter! Find cabbage, onions and beets from Paul’s Produce.

  • 1 cup chopped purple cabbage — makes blue on white eggs, green on brown eggs
  • 1 cup red onion skins — makes lavender or red eggs
  • 1 cup yellow onion skins — makes orange on white eggs, rusty red on brown eggs
  • 1 cup shredded beets — makes pink on white eggs, maroon on brown eggs
  • 2 tablespoons ground turmeric — makes yellow eggs
  • 1 bag Red Zinger tea — makes lavender eggs

→ Add 1 tablespoon white vinegar to every cup of strained dye liquid

→ For every dozen eggs, plan on using at least 4 cups of dye liquid
